Your Privacy Is Important to Us

Thank you for visiting StopPain.org. This web site is sponsored by philanthropic funding from visitors like you and organizations committed to the advancement of pain and palliative care education. StopPain.org is operated by the Department of Pain Medicine and Palliative Care at Beth Israel Medical Center, New York.

Since your privacy is of utmost importance to us, and we want you to feel comfortable viewing our health-care information and using our interactive services, we would you to know more about the information we gather from visitors to our homepage. What This Privacy Policy Covers

This Privacy Policy applies only to StopPain.org and our online products. Some of the links on our site connect to other web sites. Once you exit StopPain.org and enter another web site, please be aware that any information you disclose on or through those sites is not subject to our privacy policy. StopPain.org does not endorse and is not responsible for the privacy practices of third party web sites to which we link. You should always review the privacy policy for those sites to understand how they treat your personal information.

By using StopPain.org or any of our interactive tools, listservs, email newsletters, online conferences, web-based education, etc., you agree to the terms of this Privacy Policy. We will not share information about individual users with any third party, except to comply with applicable law or valid legal process. It is also assuring for you to know that StopPain.org does not sell or share any information about individual users with third parties.

Information StopPain.org Gathers and Tracks

We gather two types of information about users:

Information that users provide through optional, voluntary submissions, i.e., by email and online registration forms. These are voluntary submissions to receive our electronic newsletters, featured manuals, CD-ROMs, slide kits, etc., to participate in our email discussion groups, message boards or forums, to email a friend, and from participation in online surveys.

StopPain.org tracks user traffic patterns throughout all of our sites. Information we gather through aggregated tracking is compiled from web site statistical logs of page views, files and directories accessed, and unique visitors to various sections of the site. Sometimes we track and catalog the search terms that users enter in our Search function, but this tracking is never associated with individual users. We do not track what individual users read but rather the overall performance of each page. This information allows us to better tailor our content to your needs and preferences and to help our content providers better understand the demographics of our audience, so they can continue to write information to meet your needs and interests.

Optional, Voluntary Submission of Personal Information

1. Cookies

If your computer allows, we may place a small text file, called a "cookie", in your web browser’s files. We use cookies to track user traffic patterns (as described above). Our system delivers a one-time cookie to better track pages visited and click rates. Cookies also help us authenticate our users. Most browsers offer instructions on how to reset the browser to reject cookies.

2. Electronic Newsletters and Direct Mailings

We offer free electronic newsletters to users and gather email addresses of users who wish to subscribe. Email addresses are stored and utilized for their intended purpose until users remove themselves from the our mailing lists by following the links provided in each newsletter.

3. Email Discussion Groups and Threaded Discussion Groups

This privacy policy does not protect you when you use any of StopPain.org’s discussion groups. As a service, we feature online discussion groups. Please be aware that information you post on any online discussion is public and may be seen or collected by third parties that do not adhere to our privacy policy. You should have no expectation of privacy when you participate in an online discussion group.

4. Interactive Products

Our slide compendium, web-based education modules, and other interactive products may require online registration or online forms that health-care professionals may submit to receive Continuing Medical Education units. Beth Israel Medical Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council on Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.

5. Surveys

StopPain.org occasionally conducts user surveys to better target our content to our audience. We sometimes share the aggregated demographic information in these surveys with our sponsors and partners. We never share any of this information about specific individuals with any third party, nor do we sell this information.

Children

Consistent with the Federal Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA), we will never knowingly request personally identifiable information from anyone under the age of 13 without requesting parental consent.
