The aim of this lecture is to explore the relationship between the clinical
use of opioid drugs for treatment of chronic pain and the potential for
abuse, addiction, and diversion of these drugs.
The lecture begins with general comments about the complexity of the interface
between pain and chemical dependency and clear definitions of clinically-relevant
phenomena. These definitions are then followed by a discussion that focuses
on opioid pharmacotherapy.
