Palliative Care News: Visit the Module, "Preventing and Caring for Pressure Ulcers" What's In The News

Visit the new module, Preventing and Caring for Pressure Ulcers. The site begins with a simple yet powerful Flash™ animation and features easy-to-understand pages with illustrations for patients about the layers of healthy skin and how to recognize and prevent pressure ulcers. An expanded section for family caregivers and nursing assistants includes how to work alongside healthcare professionals to prevent pressure ulcers and provide optimal care.

Two practical handouts (.pdf downloads) for patients and for caregivers help in providing education about pressure ulcer prevention, care of an ulcer, and recognition of critical events. The site also contains links to other pressure ulcer Web resources.

This patient and caregiver module is part of a larger educational project, Pressure Ulcers in the Medically Ill: Addressing a Major Public Health Problem Through Professional and Family Education. Two distinct E-learning modules—one for physicians, and a second for nurses—were made possible by a generous grant from The Leir Charitable Foundations, In Memory of Erna D. Leir.
