The American Pain Society (APS) recently named Beth Israel's Department
of Pain Medicine and Palliative Care (DPMPC) as a "2009 Center
of Excellence." The APS annually recognizes six U.S. pain centers
for excellence and innovation in interdisciplinary care, academic contributions
and community involvement.
"We are very honored to receive this award from the American Pain
Society, the country's most respected interdisciplinary society of pain
specialists," says Russell K. Portenoy, MD, DPMPC Chairman. "It
is both affirming and humbling to be praised by respected colleagues
for our excellent clinical care and contributions to the broader professional
community, and to society at large. Our first goal is always to offer
patients the best pain care possible, and this prestigious award is
recognition for our efforts and for the continuing support we receive
