Overview of the relationship between pain and obesity: What do we know? Where do we go next?

Overweight or obesity and pain are significant problems of increasing prevalence, and understanding the relationship between the two is the focus of a growing body of research. This review suggests a likely relationship between increasing weight and pain, such as osteoarthritis and low back pain. Studies report that overweight or obesity early in life is a risk factor for pain and that both pain and overweight/obesity negatively affect quality of life. Researchers think that this is due to mechanical and metabolic problems and, possibly, lifestyle choices. Treatments for obesity may reduce pain secondary to weight loss. More research needs to focus on mechanisms of the relationship between pain and obesity, models that address the occurrence of both, and effective treatments for obesity.
