Teleconference Briefing: National Expert Panel Releases Recommendations to Improve Chronic Pain Care for 70 Million Americans - Wednesday, November 4, 2009, 11:00 AM - NOON (EST)

Recognizing that the burden of chronic pain is greater than that of diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined, a national panel of pain experts will release a new report on Wednesday, November 4, describing the scope of an epidemic of undertreated and mismanaged chronic pain affecting more than 70 million Americans. The panel will release nine recommendations for government agencies, Congress and the medical community to address the current inefficiencies in pain care and treatment.

This teleconference briefing will release the report, A Call to Revolutionize Chronic Pain Care in America: An Opportunity in Health Care Reform. The report calls for major medical school and health system reforms. It also spotlights the inequities of pain care that disproportionately affect minorities and low-income individuals. Co-Chairs from the panel will discuss their recommendations, and a patient will share their pain story.

The Mayday Fund Special Committee on Pain and the Practice of Medicine will also launch a new website allowing other stakeholders to sign on in support of the recommendations. The report and sign-on page will be available at http://www.MaydayPainReport.org at 11 AM EST on Wednesday, November 4.
