Observership Program Overview

The Department of Pain Medicine and Palliative Care maintains an active observership program for visitors from the United States and abroad. In 1999 alone, over 80 observers from 12 countries visited the DPMPC in hopes of replicating our unique model of care at their institutions. Observers participate in all departmental activities, including seminars, case conferences, research meetings, while gaining exposure to clinical practice in the acute care hospital, ambulatory practice, and home care. Topics covered include post-operative pain management, chronic pain assessment and treatment, symptom management in advanced disease, care of the hospice and dying patient, program planning, fundraising, quality improvement, education and outcome assessment.
