Fellowships at The Department of Pain Medicine and Palliative Care
Since its founding in 1997 by Russell K. Portenoy, MD, the Department of Pain Medicine and Palliative Care (DPMPC) at Beth Israel Medical Center DPMPC has built one of the nation’s leading fellowships in pain medicine, as well as a comprehensive array of patient services, research initiatives, and educational activity. The department is internationally renowned for its training programs, which include year long fellowships for physicians, nurses and social workers, and numerous on-site and online offerings. In addition, the Department plays a leadership role in national efforts to address policies related to the under-treatment of pain, while advancing the research in this complex field.
The DPMPC is a 2009 winner of the American Pain Society’s Center of Excellence Award. This award recognizes select pain centers for excellence and innovation in interdisciplinary care, academic contributions, and involvement with the community. The award acknowledges the many challenges inherent in maintaining a team of professionals able to provide outstanding care for patients with all types of acute and chronic pain disorders, both in the hospital and in ambulatory practice.
Since 1997, the DPMPC has trained 70 physicians in pain medicine or hospice and palliative medicine, as well as ten advanced practice nurses and ten social workers in palliative care. Many of our graduates have assumed leadership positions in academic medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center and around the country, in such centers as UCLA, Montefiore Medical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, and McGill University.
Fellowship Programs are supported by generous philanthropic grants from The Y.C. Ho/Helen and Michael Chiang Foundation, The Harold and Isabel Feld Foundation, The Leir Charitable Foundations, Medtronic Neuromodulation, the Sigmund Freedman Charitable Trust, and Mrs. Cynthia Zirinsky.
