Russell K. Portenoy, MD
Russell K. Portenoy, MD, is Chairman of the Department of Pain Medicine and Palliative Care—the first of its kind in the country—at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York, New York. He also is Professor of Neurology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, for which Beth Israel serves as the Manhattan campus.

Dr Portenoy received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. He completed a residency in neurology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a fellowship in pain management at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Active as both a researcher and an educator, Dr Portenoy has published extensively on topics related to pain and analgesics, treatments for symptoms other than pain, symptom assessment, and quality of life. A past president of the American Pain Society, he is a recipient of its Wilbert E. Fordyce Clinical Investigator Award and Distinguished Service Award. Dr Portenoy also is secretary of the International Association for the Study of Pain and a trustee of the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Dr Portenoy is editor-in-chief of an international, peer-reviewed medical journal, the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management. In addition, he is an associate editor for th
e clinical sciences section of the journal Pain and serves on other editorial boards.
