The Institute for Education and Research in Pain and Palliative Care

The Institute for Education and Research in Pain and Palliative Care provides the academic infrastructure for the Department.

The Institute organizes educational programs, such as core courses for staff development, and conferences on pain and chemical dependency, research in palliative care, and geriatric palliative care.

It has also established the following ongoing educational initiatives:

Physician Fellowship in Pain and Palliative Care (supported, in part, by the Knoll Pharmaceutical Company)

Nurse Fellowship in Pain and Palliative Care (supported by the Breast and Prostate Cancer Foundation)

One month electives in pain management and palliative care for residents and Fellows

Observership in palliative care (an NIH-supported joint project with the Department of Psychiatry, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center)

Weekly case-based palliative care teaching program for medical house staff rotating through the oncology and AIDS units (supported by a grant from the United Hospital Fund).

Weekly Departmental clinical case conference and monthly research conference

The Institute publishes the Department's Newsletter, and oversees the continued development of the stoppain.org web site (supported in part by Ortho Biotech, Inc.).

The Institute maintains The Resource Center for Pain Medicine and Palliative Care at Beth Israel Medical Center. The Resource Center collects, creates, and disseminates educational materials in diverse media, including teaching modules, published newsletters and journals, key books, interactive electronic teaching programs, and on-line services related to pain management and palliative care.

The Institute maintains an active research program and offers a wide-ranging program of clinical research focused on analgesic therapies, treatments for symptoms other than pain, and quality of life investigations. Research includes a prospective longitudinal survey of quality-of-life outcomes in patients with diverse types of progressive illness, a survey of family caregivers, and a survey of caregiver survivors of patients who recently died. Clinical trials are currently investigating two new delivery systems for systemic opioids and several novel compounds for chronic pain.
